Prepping for a Plein Air Event

One of my happiest art moments came last week, when I was accepted into the McMichael Gallery’s juried plein air painting competition!  I’ve visited them many times since childhood to admire their stunning Group of 7 pieces, and the creative osmosis alone should be enough to keep me in bliss for two straight days next weekend!

But also the pressure begins – to hold my own with established artists who I’ve admired for years.  And also to speak coherently when I get to meet them in person!  🙂

What I never knew about the McMichael is that they’re surrounded by 100 acres of landscape that echoes the gorgeous paintings in their collection.   Everything from deep shaded woodland, to fields of wildflowers, to rushing streams and butterflies.

So this morning the family and I made a pilgrimage to scope out some potential locations for next weekend’s competition.  Here’s some Canadian landscape eye candy for you:

Art lovers are invited to come out on Sunday afternoon to vote for their favourite painting (starting at 3:30 pm), and to enjoy a Family Plein Air Festival.  Kids can participate and learn how to paint from life in the landscape from professional artists.

Hope to see you there!

In other news, my painting below was recognized yesterday with a People’s Choice award at the Ontario Plein Air Society Challenge in Norval, Ontario!  It was a really special moment, to know that people had cast votes for my painting and to feel that much community support!  Thanks to all who came out!
